*Update 12/17 – Tam & Tao has undergone some changes in pricing and device availability. The HD version is now a universal app that will work on both the iPad and iPhone. There is also an iPhone only version available and the price for each of the apps has become more reasonable than it was at the time of my original review.
Tam & Tao in Numberland is an interactive counting app that’s based on Montessori mathematical methods. Tam & Tao are twins wandering through the world of numbers, exploring things as they go. Each number from zero to nine is represented in a different scene. The graphics are beautifully done and you’ll find objects representing each number scattered throughout the scenes. The app will guide you to tap on certain things on the screen, counting them and making things happen. The number for the scene is stated and then drawn on the screen. If you tap on Tam you will use number rods to represent the number. If you tap on Tao you will again be shown how to write the number and you’ll have a chance to practice in a blank notebook. You may do this for each of the numbers.
After working your way through Numberland you can visit a blank drawing pad and practice writing and drawing numbers and objects on your own. There is also a counting section where you count and drag spindles to the matching numbers. It’s good practice working for working with manipulatives and puzzling numbers out. Taking things one step farther the app’s language can be switched to French so your child can learn their numbers in another language.
Numberland is a beautiful app and I like the way it works in an adventure along with number practice. My only concern is the app’s price seems very high. If you’re wondering whether this is the app for you I’d suggest trying out the lite version. It only contains the number five but will give you a taste of what the full version has to offer.
**I’ve also been given five promo codes to give away for Tam & Tao in Numberland. Interested? Leave me a comment, promo codes only valid in the US App Store.
Price when Reviewed: $9.99
