The Tallow Candle:  The Tallow Candle app is a fun new interactive storybook presented by Timbuktu Labs.  With The Tallow Candle, children will enjoy reading a newly discovered masterpiece of Hans Christian Andersen (the manuscript was hidden for years in Denmark’s National Archives).  The app is recommended for children who are 8 years old and up.  This app tells the story of a tallow candle who seeks help from a tinder box to ignite herself.  Within the app, children will find all sorts of interactive features; such as: tapping on the tallow candle to bring it to life, lighting up the candle, tapping on the candle to make it dirty, and using the tinder box to kindle fire.  If you would like to share a special Hans Christian Andersen story with your child, be sure to check out The Tallow Candle!  Requirements: Compatible with iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, iPhone 5, iPod touch (3rd generation), iPod touch (4th generation), iPod touch (5th generation), and iPad. Hansel and Gretel Milkbook:  The Hansel and Gretel Milkbook app features a light and lively version of the classic Brothers Grimm tale.  With Hansel and Gretel Milkbook, children will enjoy an interactive fairy tale that has beautiful artwork and intuitive interactions.  Children can listen to narration in English, Italian or Spanish (or read the story on their own without narration).  Some of the fun interactions include tapping the screen to hear the birds, rabbits and owls, as well as helping Gretel push the witch into the oven!  This app is designed for children ages 3 years old and up.  The app features child-friendly text, beautiful illustrations, cute characters and modern graphics.  There is also an option to turn on/off the background music.  If you would like to share this Grimm Brothers classic with your children, be sure to check out Hansel and Gretel Milkbook!  Requirements: Compatible with iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad.  Requires iOS 4.3 or later.  Price: $2.99 ~ See Hansel and Gretel Milkbook in the App Store

 

Harold the Horse by the Hedge:  The Harold the Horse by the Hedge app is now free for a limited time!  With Harold the Horse by the Hedge, children will read a fun interactive picture book.  This story is fun for all ages and features beautiful illustrations and artwork.  Come along with Harold as he meets a new unexpected friend, Manni the Mole.  Harold and Manni set off on an adventure to find the marked treasure on Manni’s map – the tough part is finding a way to cross the big green hedge!  There are 13 interactive scenes in the app.  This app is perfect for young children as it is features intuitive navigation and is completely ad-free (no in-app purchases or links to external sites either)!  If you would like to share a fun new interactive picture book with your child, be sure to check out Harold the Horse by the Hedge!  Requirements: Compatible with iPad. Dashes:  The Dashes app is perfect for those of us who love to take photos and share them with others.  With Dashes, users are able to collaboratively tell stories by capturing, managing, and selectively sharing photos, videos, text, and more!  The neat thing about Dashes is that it allows you to control your audience.  Users can share their photos, etc. with those people who are dear to them, and not the whole world.  The new version of Dashes (recent update) allows users to easily navigate through stories with new bottom menus, and features improved flow, as well as an Activity Center for notifications.  As I said before, with Dashes you can keep your world as private as you want – members can be added to your “profile” by email, SMS, or even QR scan.  If you would like to try a new way to share your photos, etc. – be sure to check out Dashes!  Requirements: Compatible with iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, iPhone 5, iPod touch (3rd generation), iPod touch (4th generation), iPod touch (5th generation), and iPad. Adventure Activity Puzzle:  The Adventure Activity Puzzle app is a fun puzzle app recommended for children ages 2 and up.  With Adventure Activity Puzzle, children will be able to play with all sorts of puzzles from four different themes (including fun themes like pirates).  The app features 20 puzzles total, all with cute graphics and sound effects.  As far as free puzzles, the app provides 5 puzzles for free and the others may be purchased through an in-app purchase.  Parents can adjust the difficulty level for their specific child (so this app can be enjoyed by younger and older children).  There is even a preview of the puzzle which can be manually set to on/off, depending on the needs of your specific child as well.  The app also features a pop-the-balloons mini-game as well.  If you would like to share a fun new puzzle app with your child, be sure to check out Adventure Activity Puzzle!  Requirements: Compatible with iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad. Foldify:  The Foldify app was selected as an Apple 2012 Editor’s Choice app.  With Foldify, children and adults can draw, create, print and fold beautiful 3D figures!  One nice thing, you do not need drawing skills as Foldify has tons of free content to create high-quality figures with or you can even import photos of your own!  The figures are basically 3D cubes that have been folded into that shape.  The Foldify app will show users a realtime 3D preview that will show every action you take.  Parents and children can print their figures using AirPrint or by sending a PDF by e-mail.  Another cool feature, users can share their creations with other users online and even browse like Figures from around the world (you can even print figures that you find online).  The Foldify app comes with templates for figures, as well as many categories of stamps (i.e. eyes and mouths) and tools.  When you have finished with your work of art, you can share your creation instantly via email, or Facebook and Twitter!  I should mention that this app does not support iPad 1.  If you want to share a new way to make art with your children, be sure to check out Foldify!  Requirements: Compatible with iPad 2 Wi-Fi, iPad 2 Wi-Fi + 3G, iPad (3rd generation), iPad Wi-Fi + 4G, iPad (4th generation), iPad Wi-Fi + Cellular (4th generation), iPad mini and iPad mini Wi-Fi + Cellular. Catch a Figure:  The Catch a Figure app features a fun way to teach children their numbers, shapes and colors.  This app is recommended for children ages 2 through 6 years old.  With Catch a Figure, children will learn numbers, shapes and colors by visualization as well as listening recognition.  Parents can choose the pace of game that works best for their specific child.  The app works well for developing attention span and helps children gain a quicker response rate.  Another neat feature, the learning activities are alternated with relaxation activities to give little ones a break!  Kids will be able to play the learning games in a fun African savanna setting, complete with animals to take care of.  Parents can watch their child’s progress through a results display.  There are no ads in the app for parents to worry about either.  If you would like to share a fun new educational app with your child, be sure to check out Catch a Figure!  Requirements: Compatible with iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad.
