The Blues is “the worlds first comic book that tells the story of blues music” and I learned a great deal about the history of the blues from this app. The story is told in comic book format and centers around a man named Otis who is explaining how he first found out about the blues. One night Otis snuck out of the house and found himself at a “juke joint”. The story interweaves Otis’ recollections of his night out with the history of blues music. The musicians Muddy Waters, Chuck Berry, Elvis, The Beatles and The Rolling Stones are all mentioned in the comic book. Along with the story readers will find instructions on how to write their own blues song and create their own blues singer name.
The Blues has a soundtrack featuring, what else, blues music that makes the app come alive. There are twenty-three screens of illustrations and readers can tap on the comic book panels to zoom in on the comic. I found The Blues to be an informative and entertaining look at an important piece of African-American and musical history.
