The Legend of Momotaro Review Monica December 5, 2012 Elementary Journey to ancient Japan as a hero is born in the most unlikely circumstances and goes on an adventure to defeat the evil ogres who threaten to destroy his homeland. The Legend of Momotaro is an exquisitely animated e-book with several interactive hidden surprises that will not only educate but entertain your children. This famous Japanese legend is brought to life right before your eyes through amazing panoramic illustrations and professional narration. I was mesmerized not only by the beautiful story, but also by the way the scenery magically changes as you progress through the story. The Legend of Momotaro is about a humble couple who have but one simple wish: to have a child of their own. After years of longing and prayer, the gods finally answer in an unusual way. One day as the wife is doing her laundry in the river a large and delicious looking peach comes floating downstream. She retrieves it with the intention of creating a delicious meal for her husband. Later, as she prepares to cut it open, it splits down the middle and out comes a baby boy! They name him Momotaro which means Child of a Peach. Momotaro is a special and gifted boy and his parents and treasure him very much. One day he receives a call to go and fight the evil ogres who threaten to take over and destroy Japan. He leaves his beloved family and travels to find the ogres. Along his way, he meets 3 animal friends who desire to travel with him and help him in his quest. They must learn to work together in order to be successful and accomplish their goal. The story can either be narrated or you can read it yourself. There are over 100 hidden surprises to be discovered as you read. You can tap anywhere a blooming flower appears to reveal a scroll. The scrolls contain information that helps you delve deeper into aspects of the story, Japanese culture, the language and history. The hidden items are represented by Japanese symbols called “kanji” that are inscribed at the bottom of the screen. Once the item is found, they light up. If you need help finding them, simply tap on the ones that are not lit and a subtle hint will lead you to the right place. The Legend of Momotaro is an outstanding app. The story is beautifully written and narrated. The illustrations are magnificent as well. I really enjoyed learning more about the Japanese culture and some of the symbols used to represent words in the Japanese language. As you know, I always appreciate apps that are educational and entertaining. Any opportunity for my kids to learn about the world outside our home is valuable and important. The developer recommends this app for ages 4 and up but I would change that to ages 6 and up. The story is a bit complex and lost the interest of my younger children. If you are looking for a way to teach your children about other cultures or simply looking for a great story to share with your family, then pick-up The Legend of Momotaro. You will not be disappointed! Price: $2.99 See the app in iTunes Requirements: Compatible with iPad. Requires iOS 5.0 or later.
