Toca Doctor

May 3, 2011

Toca Boca recently followed up their apps Toca Tea Party and Helicopter Taxi with Toca Doctor. The first two apps used the iDevice to enable, free form, imaginative play but Toca Doctor is more of a “traditional” app. Traditional meaning it has mini-games and activities for your child. In Toca Doctor your child is a doctor examining a patient. Let me tell you, this poor patient has some serious issues because they have 18 different areas of the body that are bothering them! That’s a lot of aches and pains but plenty of fun for users because they get a puzzle or mini-game for each are of the body that’s flagged for “check-up”.

The activities all focus on the parts of the body. Here are a couple examples. When your child taps on the stomach they’ll get a puzzle that shows the small intestine with a toy inside. They must use their finger, or tilt the iDevice, to maneuver the toy until it’s reached it’s way out of the stomach. Another game has your child putting pieces of the inner ear back where they belong. If they tap on the knee they’ll see a scrape that must be wiped clean before they can apply a cute bandage. Oh, and the poor patient’s hair! I hope your child can tap quickly because there are some icky, hopping things that must be tapped on and cleared off this poor patient’s scalp.

Toca Doctor has plenty of quirky sound effects to go with the silly medical themed graphics. I’d say this app would be just right for young preschoolers. There’s absolutely no reading required and the activities range from very simple to the slightly tougher maze games. All of it is good silly fun that will hopefully get their patient recovering from their broken bones, red eye, splinters, bloody nose, missing internal organs, swallowed toys and other serious medical complaints!

Chalk Walk

Chalk Walk is a very unique iPad app. It has been developed to help your children improve the pincer grip they use to hold a pencil.

What I Do

I review iPhone apps for moms. I have a decent grasp of techy things but the technical guts (for lack of a better word) of how the apps work are beyond me. So my reviews will be practical and purely subjective. Reviews for moms by a real life, actual mom. My kids will vouch for me.
