“Where Am I?” Apps from Jolly Giraffe

January 31, 2011

The “Where Am I?” apps from Jolly Giraffe have been designed to help young children learn the names of objects around them. There are currently six apps in the series and they each focus on a different location including at home, in the city, on the farm, at the park and at the zoo. There is also an app that takes a look at the four seasons.

Each app follows a simple format. A picture of an object found in the chosen location is shown with it’s name at the bottom of the screen. When your child taps on the picture they’ll hear the name spoken out loud. The next screen shows a scene from the farm, city, home, etc. and it will include the object your child just looked at. They must find it and tap on it again. Once they’ve done that they can move on to the next screen and a brand new object, repeating the process over againg.

These are simple apps best suited for toddlers and young preschoolers. They have colorful illustrations that reminded me of picture books. I like the way the simple flashcards have been enhanced with an activity that reinforces the object’s place in an environment. It’s a nice way for children to begin seeing the connection between the flashcard and real life.

Price when Reviewed: $.99 for each app

Chalk Walk

Chalk Walk is a very unique iPad app. It has been developed to help your children improve the pincer grip they use to hold a pencil.

What I Do

I review iPhone apps for moms. I have a decent grasp of techy things but the technical guts (for lack of a better word) of how the apps work are beyond me. So my reviews will be practical and purely subjective. Reviews for moms by a real life, actual mom. My kids will vouch for me.
