8 Planets is an educational app that uses fun activities which means your children probably won’t even realize that they’re learning. Or if you’re like me and have forgotten everything you learned about the planets in elementary school then this app will be educational for you too.
8 Planets is broken down into four different activity groups. In “Names” you touch each planet to learn it’s name and a few facts about them. Once you’ve gone through all of the planets you’ll be asked to put them in the correct order. “Spelling” works with you on spelling out the planet names. At first you’ll only need to figure out one missing letter from each name but it will grow more difficult as you go. “Black Hole” challenges you to identify the planets by their first letter or a picture before they’re sucked into a big, bad black hole. Finally “Matching” works as a memory matching game with pictures and letters from the planets. Like “Spelling” the game becomes more difficult as you continue on. As you complete the different activities you’ll collect ribbons as a reward for your success. 8 Planets also features a report card that tracks and analyzes your child’s progress and ability using the app. I thought this feature added a nice extra touch.
8 Planets is extremely well designed, executed and educational. Honestly though, the name keeps tripping me up. Even though the scientists have declared otherwise for me there are still nine planets. I just can’t forget about poor Pluto even though my kids are constantly correcting me. Which means I could learn more from this app than I’d care to admit!
