Now, this is a neat app! Akzara is a spelling app that is designed for toddlers. The game play is simple and resembles hangman – you are shown a picture of an animal above and below there is a word with the first letter missing which you must fill in. I like that you are given a row of letters to select from – this teaches the child how to recognize certain letters as well as where they are placed in certain words when spelling. An example would be, _ N T and you would need to select an “A” to spell ANT. There are a range of words from small to large – as small as ANT or as large as KANGAROO. When you spell a word correctly, you are congratulated and you continue to move through the alphabet from A to Z. I like how the word is spelled out loud and then the word is said to reinforce learning.
Perhaps, the most interesting feature of this app for parents is that there is a special section called the “Parents’ Zone”. The “Parents’ Zone” allows you to view a log of your child’s data when playing the app. The data compiled tells you the length of time played, accuracy % on word completion, as well as which words your child is completing the quickest and which words seem to take a little longer to solve. I thought that this was really great and provided helpful feedback for parents.
I really enjoyed the look and feel of this app – the animations were bright and colorful and the sound effects were great. Personally, my son is a little young for this app – but I definitely look forward to playing and learning with him in the future. I think that this app would be perfect for those parents who are teaching their children how to spell and want to have fun doing it.
*A note from Heather – I love the look of these graphics! I also like how it tells you how long your child spent playing the app. Thanks Nikki!
