Are You My Friend? is an e-book that’s available through the iTunes iBookstore. It’s written by Annie Fox, the author of Middle School Confidential, an app I’ve featured on the site previously. In this book Annie tackles the tricky subject of friendship. The story is told through the eyes of Raymond, a young fellow who feels like his only friend is his stuffed bear Snowball. Other characters include Raymond’s big sister Shelia and her not-so-nice friend Ilana. I found the interactions between the siblings and friends very true to life. There are things said in this book that I’ve overheard many a time. Annie Fox definitely knows kids and their issues. Are You My Friend? does have a happy ending and it involves Raymond finding a friend and his sister Shelia sticking up for him against Ilana’s bullying. As a mom who has two daughters and then a son I appreciated seeing the big sister take a positive stance and defending her little brother. At the end of the story there is a page titled “How does it make you feel?” This section talks about the book’s characters and the feelings they experience in the story. It also has question prompts that are designed to get children thinking and talking about their own feelings.
Are You My Friend? has illustrations by Eli Noyes, an Academy Award nominee. The e-book comes with optional narration that sounds wonderful. Listening to that combined with the music and sound effects was a very pleasant experience. Keep in mind, there are no animations or interactions here, this is not a storybook app. It is an e-book that you purchase through the iBookstore. You will be getting an experience that’s similar to a traditional book but with some terrific modern add-ons. I found Are You My Friend? to be a positive story with a timely message for children of all ages.
