- Poetic rhyming style
- Silly animal mash-ups
- Easy even for little fingers
Nosy Crow apps are ones I watch for. Their whimsical images and narration are attention grabbers and I love their e-stories, so I was excited to find Axel Scheffler’s Flip Flap Safari on my to-do list.
What crazy creatures will you meet today? That all depends on a swipe of the finger. This app is a mash-up flip flap book waiting for your child to match the upper half of an animal with the lower half. Zebelopes and buffingos may appear. One of our favorites was a Girinco made by combining a giraffe with a flamingo, can you imagine how that would look. That’s a lot of neck to balance on one skinny pink leg. You may also choose to build realistic animals too.
Each half is paired with a rhyming poetic description for the animal and they are full of interesting facts. Did you know that a water buffalo’s coat is red when its born or that it take so long for food to go down a giraffe’s neck that when he’s finished breakfast that it’s nearly time for lunch? Putting together a complete Antelope we learned “My sense of smell is good. I’ve got big ears and huge, sharp eyes. Don’t bother to creep up on me – It won’t be a surprise. My legs are long and slender, and they take me round the plain. I canter up Savannah hills, then gallop back again!”
Accompanied with a peppy jungle rhythm, this playful app is great for any age but will appeal to the younger crowd with its simple finger swipe and speedy shuffle action. Your sure to find giggling fun as you create unique and fascinating animals with your child.
Disclosure: I received a free copy of this app for review purposes.
