Overview
We absolutely adore Sandra Boynton’s books at our home, to the point where the copies torn, tattered very much showing their love. My all time favorite Boynton title is Moo, Baa, La La La and that has already received the app treatment from Nosy Crow. The newest Boynton app is Barnyard Dance and it’s a zesty version of the original. I just read over the iTunes description and they used that same adjective – zesty. It’s fitting!
Barnyard Dance is a fun story to read out loud and it’s a fun story to listen to in as an app. The narrator (or the Big Guy) as he is called in these apps is bluegrass musician John Stey. He reads the story like he’s calling an actual square dance and the timing is perfect. The narration sounds exactly like what I’ve always heard in my head when I’ve read the story to my children. In addition the the narrated version of the story there’s the option to “Read it Myself”. If children choose to do this they can always hear John Stey’s narration by tapping on the text. Michael Ford’s original music is again included with this app and it plays in the background throughout.
Each screen has the familiar Sandra Boynton animals and your children can tap, slide and spin them around and around to the music. The animals do what they are doing in the story. Turkeys trot, horses prance, frogs hop and everyone promenades. One of my favorite interactions is the fiddling cow. You can “pull” on his fiddle and he will play, adding to the background music. All together it creates one big, festive square dance.
What more can I say? We all love Barnyard Dance and the story’s words stay stuck in my head. The fact that I smile when I’m reciting them to myself at random times of the day after my daughter has been playing with the app for the umpteenth time is surely the sign of a hit!
