Ecology – once an unknown concept is now on the forefront of many people’s minds. As we work to reduce, reuse, and recycle to preserve the precious resources our planet provides for us, many more adults and children are becoming interested in how the ecological system of our planet works. It is a delicate balance of producers, consumers and the environment that work together to provide what we need to survive on this planet such as oxygen and water. iBiome-Wetland is an app that is designed to teach those concepts of ecology to older elementary-aged children in a fun and exciting way.

This app allows children the opportunity to build their own bio domes in three wetland habitats: freshwater marsh, saltwater marsh and mangrove swamp. With the guidance of the likeable Professor Bio as their guide, children will learn all about the unique conditions that exist in each habitat and how the species that live in each one work together to help sustain life. They learn about the amazing food webs that producers, consumers and the environment make and then they must re-create those food webs to earn things to place in their biosphere. The webs get increasingly more complex as play progresses and their knowledge and understanding of the concepts increases. As you child adds more items to their bio dome they earn badges as rewards that recognize their mastery of ecology concepts. Once they complete a bio dome they can move on to a different habitat or go back and re-create another bio dome in their favorite habitat.

Ecology and Biology are not exactly my cup of tea, but I have to say that I found this app quite enjoyable and educational. I learned several new things about the environment and surprisingly, the app held my interest and I wanted to keep playing. My 8-year old daughter saw me playing the app and became fascinated by it and has since expressed an interest in biology which I love! She has played it several times since then, and loves to come and share new bits of information she has learned while playing it. This app would be a wonderful tool to use in the classroom for teachers who incorporate a biology or ecology unit into their curriculum. It would also be great for mom’s who home-school or for any parent who has a child who has an interest in science. The illustrations are beautifully drawn and exceptionally life-like which really adds to the quality and enjoyment of the game. iBiome-Wetland is truly a valuable and high-quality app that, in my opinion, is a great investment in your child’s education.
