Based on the Disney/Pixar movie, Brave: Storybook Deluxe is a wonderful storybook app from Disney Digital Books. Fans of the movie will love joining Merida, Princess of DunBroch in an interactive adventure and quest as they follow along with the retelling of the film. The graphics used in Brave: Storybook Deluxe are stunning and the short film clips add a dimension my children loved. As an added bonus, following the story at home allows us to quickly skip past the witch!
The app has three modes: read and explore, follow along and play.
In read and explore, you set your own pace for reading the story. You may choose to listen to the narrator (great accent!) or record your own voice and play it back through both this mode and the follow along mode. As you listen to the narration and soundtrack in read and explore you can begin to explore the graphics on the following page. While the graphics are really wonderful, the interactivity is limited. There are no puzzles to solve but there is a hunt for special arrows that will come in handy in “play”. The most interaction comes on any page with Merida’s triplet brothers! This is one of the longer interactive books I have seen at 36 pages.
Follow along mode is similar to read and explore. The reader listens and watches as the narrator takes them through the story leaving out the interactivity. This is a good mode for smaller children as it is harder for them to exit the story in the middle.
Play has four different options. The favorite game in our house is Merida’s Challenge which lets a player shoot arrows at targets from the back of Merida’s horse. There are three levels to choose from. First though, complete the Archer’s Quest by collecting special arrows in “Read and Explore”. These arrows will be useful in completing the harder levels in Merida’s challenge. Play also consists of several puzzles taken from the graphics in the story and coloring pages that were enjoyed by my younger children.
We adored Merida’s story in this app and recommend it to both children who have seen the movie and those who have not. While the story will ‘spoil’ the movie for kids who have yet to make it to the theater, it should give them an overview of the storyline and get them ready to see more! The clips from the movie are a very surprising and nice touch. However, be aware that Mor’du, the demon bear, as well as the witch may frighten younger children so Brave: Storybook Deluxe is suited for ages 5+.
