I don’t know any kid who looks forward to visiting the doctor. Whether it is for a sick visit or just a check-up, most kids usually respond with some degree of anxiety and fear when faced with a doctor’s appointment. One of the best ways to help kids overcome fear and anxiety is to role-play. By allowing children to act out the situation, many of them can work through their fears through play. What better way to role-play a visit to the doctor than with the kid-favorite character Caillou! Join Caillou as he goes to his check-up with the doctor and learns all about his body and the tools the doctor uses to make sure he is healthy and strong!
It is time for Caillou’s check-up and he is feeling a little unsure about the visit and what is going to happen once he is there. Your child will accompany Caillou step-by-step through his check-up and explore the amazing human body and use the instruments a doctor would really use in an appointment. Just like in real life, Caillou’s appointment starts with standing on the scale to be weighed and measured. Kids will slide the weights on the scale and the ruler to get his measurements. Then it is on to taking a temperature with a thermometer, blood pressure with a blood pressure cuff and listening to his lungs and heart with a stethoscope. Your children will do everything a doctor would do and Caillou explains what everything is and does along the way. After each step in the checkup, your children will be congratulated and reinforced with cheering and confetti. Some of the parts of the checkup will utilize the microphone in your device and you child will use their own voice and body to make sounds needed to complete that part of the checkup. Once the visit is complete, your child will enjoy sharing a healthy snack with Caillou as a reward for being such a star patient!
This app has quickly become a favorite of my 3-year-old. He loves Caillou anyway, but he also has really enjoyed playing doctor with Caillou. I have no doubt that as he plays he is becoming more familiar and comfortable with what happens in a doctor’s office and that knowledge will benefit him when he has to go back to the doctor again. I love how the whole feel of this app is very kid-friendly and positive, making a doctor’s visit seem easy and non-threatening. This app is a free initial download which allows you to complete the first few steps of the checkup. However, in order to finish the entire checkup you must buy the in-app upgrade for $5.99. As much as I loved this app, I think that price is a little bit high for the rest of the activities. Additionally, even after you purchase the in-app upgrade ads for other apps by the same developer pop up which might entice kids to want other apps. I know that many parents tend to avoid those types of apps, so be prepared for that. All in all, I think this app is a very fun and beneficial way for kids to learn all about the doctor’s office through play. And getting to play with Caillou makes it extra fun!
Disclosure: I received a free copy of this app for review purposes.
