Cartoon ABC is a new app that is designed specifically for children ages two through five.  This app combines cartoon animations and a simple touch interface to help kids learn the alphabet.  There are over 100 different animations that correspond to the letters of the alphabet, so kids will definitely not get bored with this app!  I really loved the clean look of the app and the illustrations and sound reinforcement.

When I think of how many children’s alphabet apps there are  – it is overwhelming.  I would have to say that this is one of the best that I have seen so far – not only will your child learn their ABC’s, they will also receive an education on phonics, spelling/reading, and word recognition.  I like that the opening page of the app is a screen with flashcards.  Kids can pick any flashcard they want to – they do not have to go in order from A to Z.  Each flashcard will take you to a letter that will display both the upper and lower case of the letter and pronounce the letter.  For example, Aa will be shown with a picture of an alligator…but wait, there’s more…simply look to your right and you will see a blinking outline of an anchor – pull the anchor and it will become the main event…and then look to your left and see the blinking apples on a tree, and so on.  Your child may touch each of these items as many times as they want to hear the words and look at each object and when they are done simply push the arrow in the corner to proceed to the next letter.  The background music and interactive animations are great and help to keep your child’s attention.

Another great feature of this app is the parents section, which you access from the main page by sliding on the light switch.  In the parents zone, you can setup profiles with your child’s picture and name (multiple profiles allowed).  There is also a progress tab to show you how your child is doing with each letter – to make sure that he or she is getting through all the letters from A to Z.  You can also find a settings tab here where you can adjust the music and sound effects.

I really enjoyed the Cartoon ABC app and think that it would be very useful for teaching kids their alphabet.  I know that I will definitely be playing this app with my son who is almost 2, he is the perfect age for it!  I would highly recommend this app to parents with children who are learning their alphabet – and it is free!

Fun idea! I subbed for K ytaeerdsy and was amazed at the different skill levels while we practiced writing “J” and “j” as well as “Q” and “q” It was a piece of cake for some and so hard for others… I think this is a great tool to get ready for K.
