Count the Animals! is not your average counting app. Yes, your toddler and preschooler will be learning to count and there will be animals, but this is a very quirky and charming app. I can’t think of another app I’ve seen that’s had children count fleas or shown bird poop in such an endearing light. The app covers the numbers 1-20 and each number is represented by an off-beat illustration. Tapping on the screen results in an animation and some counting that ties in with the illustration. The graphics are unique and will cause plenty of giggles.

Count the Animals! comes with several different options for customizing the app experience. You can begin with standard counting, from 1-20. Or you can mix it up and see the flashcards in random order. Count the animals on screen or turn on the option that transforms them into numbers when you tap. The app comes with sixteen languages so you can learn the number names in Arabic, Lithuanian, English, Japanese and Slovakian just to name a few.

A lite version of the app covers the numbers 1-5 and gives you a taste of the app’s spirit. The app has been on the New and Noteworthy lists in several country’s App Stores. Personally, I quite enjoyed the subtle humor and unique feel to Count the Animals!
