How many of you have been hit with the “I’m Boreds” already this summer? We’ve had them here and that was just the first day of summer break! Enter Creative Genius – On the Go! a collection of imagination stirring activities for children. The app has over 150 activities, scenarios and diversions. They go by different names but the goal is one and the same. Get kids thinking! All together they are divided into three categories. The activities can be done independently or with friends and family. Here’s a look at what you get when you put a Creative Genius on your iPhone.

  • Imagine That! – There are 50 Imagine That! challenges. They are designed to get your children thinking and looking at things in a different way. Here’s an example of an Imagine That! challenge: “Walking the Dog-In this game of potential disasters, players try to think of things that can go wrong while walking the dog. Play continues until a player cannot think of another possible misfortune.”
  • What Ifs? – 50 What Ifs? are included and the idea is to challenge your child to come up with ways to solve the “impossible”. An example of a What If?: “What if…there was a National Candy Law requiring you to eat only candy for one whole week?”
  • Wack-tivities – Rounding things off are 50 Wack-tivities. These are more like games for children to play together. They are silly. Here’s an example. “Birthday Barkers-Sing the Happy Birthday song as if you were a dog, a cat, a pig or an owl. What other animals could participate in the song? How might they change the words? What kinds of birthday presents might the animals give to one other?”

Each Creative Genius entry includes a notebook, timer and the ability to save it to a favorites list for future reference. Each will tell you how many children the activity was designed for. You can sort through the lists yourself or let the app randomly select something for you. A section titled “What Is Creativity?” is also included. I found this to be helpful information about how creativity and imagination evolve and what we can do to nurture it in our children.

Creative Genius – On the Go! is just the kind of app my older children need. They need less apps that provide screen time and more that get them up and thinking and interacting with each other. I’d definitely recommend this one for older children! I’d spend much, much more than $.99 to bust the boredom at my house this summer.

Price when Reviewed: $.99

This is going to be so perfect for our road trip next week, with a 10 and 5 year old.
