Jumping Pages has created a David and Goliath for the iPad with amazing animated 3D illustrations. They will catch a reader’s interest as they move and seem to pop out from the screen. Many of the pages also have an interactive element to them and things will happen when the screen is tapped or swiped. The story well known, that of David and Goliath from the Bible and the app hits the right amount of detail. I’ve read some versions that are so short you wonder what in the world David was doing out on the battlefield in the first place. Here you get just enough background information so that the enormity of what David does makes sense.

There are two versions of David and Goliath for the iPad. The first version has narration done by award winning actor Michael Cumpsty. The M.V.P. Edition is narrated by 2006 World Series M.V.P. David Eckstein. This is the version that I tried out and David does a nice job with his narration. At the end of the M.V.P. Edition you’ll find an afterward by David’s wife, actress Ashley Eckstein. Those of you who know Star Wars will probably recognize her name. She plays Ahsoka in the Star Wars: The Clone Wars cartoon series. Ashley relates her David to the David in the story and talks of how he was always small and had been told he would never find success in baseball. Through hard work and determination he overcame his personal Goliaths and Ashley encourage readers to do the same. It was a nice message and fitting ending to the story. One thing that I wished for while I was listening to Ashley was pictures of David. While Ashley speaks you see the app’s credits. It would be nice to see photographs of David as a child or baseball pictures. Something to round out the personal touch.

The illustrations for David and Goliath are top notch. I found this to be one of the most entertaining Bible stories I’ve seen for the iPad. I especially like the positive message included at the end about battling our own Goliaths. It’s a wonderful message for readers of all ages and the story is shared in a captivating way.

10% of the MVP Edition’s proceeds will be donated by the Ecksteins to several non-profit organizations they support, including Bags of Hope of Central Florida’s Feed and Read program for children.
