Enter the magical world of David Wiesner in this awe-inspiring new app called Spot. This app is based on the beautiful illustrations of the Caldecott Medal winning author. Your children can enter worlds they’ve only dreamed of by tapping and zooming in on a simple spot on the lady bug on the home screen.
This app is unique in that it is more like an eBook without narration than an interactive-game type app. The fun starts by zooming in on the spot on the back of the ladybug on the title page. From there, you enter a ladybug workshop of sorts, where you can then choose from several other “spots” on the screen to zoom in on. Each zoomed in illustration is a starting point for creative narration that you or your child can make up by themselves. The app was designed to be a spring board for creativity for your children. They can explore a world where cats are the primary inhabitants as they watch a celebratory parade go by complete with confetti and giant mouse balloons. Or they can meet the Dust Bunnies under the arm chair or the beautiful fish that live under the sea. Where ever you go, extraordinary things await! There is also a companion eBook for this app called David Wiesner’s Spot: A Parent and Educator Guide. This book is used to enhance your child’s experience with the app and also includes creative storytelling prompts for parents and unique writing and classroom activities for teachers.
I am a huge fan of David Wiesner and so I really enjoyed this app. It is definitely the type of app that is best played with some guidance and direction from a parent and teacher. Alone, it is a beautiful and fun exploration app that children could play independently but would likely get bored with after a few minutes. However, with some prompting from parents or teachers to come up with stories about the things they are seeing, this app becomes a powerful tool for learning and imagination. This would be a WONDERFUL addition for teachers to use in the classroom to enhance their writing curriculum. I have had fun using it with my kids at night as a way for us to unwind and come up with some pretty awesome bedtime stories together. David Wiesner’s Spot is a masterpiece among apps and one that I would highly recommend for family time and classroom learning experiences.
