Spending summers on my sister’s farm I used to love watching the crop dusters. I was always impressed with their skill as they raced over the fields in low looping patterns. Flying low and fast with skillful maneuverability are the talents that help Dusty follow his dream. A little plane from a small town, he wants to fly with the big planes and compete in the Wings Around the Globe Rally. He knows making this possible is going to take hard work and he enlists his friends to help. Some are always supportive like his best friend Chug who helps as much as a truck can help. Others take some convincing. Dottie his mechanic has some serious doubts and tries to convince him that he isn’t built to race. Skipper is a great flight trainer and would be perfect to give Dusty the edge he needs, but he won’t even listen to Dusty when he’s asked for help. Dusty is one persistent fellow though and his determination and continued efforts put everyone on his side and before they know it he’s made the qualifiers for the big race. Will it be enough to actually win the Rally, you’ll have to watch and see. There are so many good lessons in this book like choosing good friends, perseverance belief in self, facing fears and even forgiveness. Many of those lessons may come in handy with the beginning of a new school year.
I was impressed with the skillful integration of storybook, game play and animation clips. In setting you have the option for Auto-play. This is great for just letting the story play out for little ones that want a good story. Video clips are coordinated with the “book” pages seamlessly and really enhance the story. Games are not available in this mode. In Read and Fly you advance the pages with a right to left finger swipe and you have access not not only the clips but games as well. Guiding Dust through the big gold rings was a definite challenge for the girls and I. Race and Fly is just for flight practice. Add in things to pick up on the flight patterns and I’ll need to book a training session with the Skipper. Scan and Fly is a mode to collect Plane logo’s and unlock new planes in an adventure album. If you are like me and don’t have access to many of those its ok. In the help setting you can download and print one just for this purpose. Add a new plane every day with stats and bios.
I really like this storybook adventure. Although the load time is a little slow I think you’ll find the developers have done a great job building a top flying app.
