Goodnight Safari is the newest app from Polk Street Press. They are the folks who were behind this adorable version of the 12 Days of Christmas last month. Goodnight Safari is an interactive bedtime story that really brings children into the heart of the action. The baby animals on the savannah are getting ready for bed and on each screen children are asked to lend a hand. The baby hippo needs a bath, baby giraffe can’t reach his dinner, baby elephant must give mama a kiss. Children help the animals by tapping on the screen and triggering the animation. What I liked about the interactions was the fact that it takes more than one tap to complete the task. For example, baby giraffe isn’t full after one bite of leaves. It makes sense that he’d want a few helpings, right? Children must keep tapping on the screen until the animals are good and ready for bed. They’ll know it’s time when an arrow appears at the bottom of the screen showing them they can move on to the next screen.
Goodnight Safari has two reading modes, one with narration and one without. At any point in the story children can tap the pause button to return to the main menu or to “pick a page”. This is a convenient feature that pulls up thumbnails of the different screens in the story. Children can then tap on the one they like and go directly to that spot in the story. The artwork in Goodnight Safari is both beautiful and adorable at the same time. The artist has captured charm and personality in every animal. The zebras and hippos were my favorites. The entire app has a very calm and soothing feeling to it. Goodnight Safari is an interactive story that will help children relax instead of hyping them up with loud noises and crazy graphics. When it comes to bedtime stories that’s the type of app I’m looking for!
