Happi Reads is an educational app that has been at the top of the charts in Sweden, Denmark and Norway. The app presents three images and one word. Children must tap the image that matches the word. When they do it correctly they’ll earn a piece of fruit. After earning — pieces of fruit a large fruit fills the screen and children can “eat” it themselves. When they tap on the screen bites disappear until it’s all gone, then it’s on to the next group of words. Happi Reads has a nice soundtrack and positive sound effects. Parents can also determine whether children see uppercase or lowercase letters in the words.

Happi Reads is simple but the fruit concept really captured my kids attention. My toddler was fascinated and wanted to play with the “apple” over and over again. She had me playing for her so she could get to the part of the app where she could make the fruit disappear. Some of the words are simple and some of them are more complex. Overall I’d consider the app a good match for early readers, especially if parents are there to help when needed.
