You’ve just got home after a stressful day at work and you want nothing more than to settle back in your favorite armchair and zone out for an hour. The TV beckons. But wait a minute… where is the remote? It’s not on the couch, or under a cushion. It’s not beside the DVD or on top of the sound system either.

If this sounds familiar, and you have a smart TV, then read on to turn your iPhone into a remote control and pretty soon scrambling behind the cushion will soon be a thing of the past!

Apps that can make your life a whole lot easier

Before you make any decisions, it’s worth investigating whether your smart TV already has an app that will allow you to control the TV with your phone.

Samsung, for instance, there is Samsung SmartView; while if you own an LG, the LG TV Remove may be your best bet. Both these apps have interfaces that are simple to use. Similarly, there are apps available from companies such as Sony, Panasonic and Phillips.

Universal remote

If you’re more interested in the traditional universal remote experience, then it may be better to invest in a piece of hardware that can connect to your iPhone headphone jack. The L5 remote can be easily customized so you can tailor it to your individual needs. The app is available free on iTunes and once you’ve purchased the hardware, there are a wealth of online guides available to help you with registration and set-up.

An alternative to the L5 remote is the Peel Universal Controller. This device has the advantage of not requiring a transmitter for your phone. Instead, it’s a separate piece of equipment that receives its commands from your household’s Wi-Fi network. However, it can be a little more expensive than the L5, and the jury’s still out on whether it’s as user-friendly as it ought to be.

If you’re shopping around for the perfect piece of technology, it’s worth doing a little research to see what the best options are before making any hasty purchases. But remember, on those days where you just can’t find your TV remote, with a couple of small changes, your iPhone can be just as good, if not even better!
