We are rapidly approaching the dog days of summer.  Temperatures get hotter, kids get more bored, and mom’s patience starts wearing thin.  Gone are the days when summer break was new and exciting and children’s little brains quickly fall into what I call a “summer sleep”.  My kid’s brains kind of go numb and they seem to start forgetting everything they learned in school the year before.  I like to find activities to jump-start their minds and keep them active and stimulated so they aren’t totally clueless when the next school year begins.  Math-Possible is a great app to do that with and is the perfect way to keep math fun for your first through third grader.

Math-Possible is basically flash-cards on your mobile device that are a little more jazzed up to make math skills a little more fun to learn.  Simply choose whether you want to practice addition, subtraction, multiplication, division or a random mixture of all of the functions.  Then tap the play button and a math problem will appear on the screen with 5 possible answers underneath.  Choose the correct number and drag it to the appropriate spot in the equation to see if you got it right!  Each problem is timed and the number to stars you earn (1 to 3) depends on how quickly you solve the problem.  The problems increase in difficulty as you progress through the levels, beginning with simple one digit numbers and working up to 2 digit numbers.  After you have completed a level, you can go back and practice them over and over again.  Each game is hosted by an adorable little math monster that cheers you on and offers plenty of positive reinforcement along the way.

I really enjoyed this app.  I thought the equations and the difficulty levels were very age appropriate and tested at a knowledge level consistent of the grade levels it is recommended for.  The monsters are simply adorable and very lovable for kids.  The only thing this app is lacking is the ability to set up separate profiles for each child and some sort of tracking system to see how each child is performing at every level.  However, if you are a teacher or a parent simply looking for a fun way to keep those math skills fresh then this would be a perfect app for you!
