Are there any Entomologists in the house? No? Well, never fear…you are about to become one if you download Meet the Insects: Village Edition. This app is a jackpot for children who either love bugs or simply have the desire to learn more. While I am neither a bug-lover nor have the desire to study the creepy-crawly little creatures, I found myself fascinated by the information that is in this app and was drawn in by the amazing pictures and facts on each screen.
The app has 5 basic areas to help you become a certified bug-expert: An Observation Journal, Multimedia, Insect Stories, See Insects and Quizquiz. I would suggest starting out in the Multimedia section where you can view amazing pictures with descriptive titles and watch informational videos. Then head over to the Insect Stories where you can watch wonderfully animated and narrated stories about insects. These stories are interactive as well which make them especially fun for young children. You can drag your finger around the circle to watch the life cycle of butterflies and beetles. There are also great videos about how insects help each other and our ecosystem. Kids can also learn about different insect sounds and how to imitate them. The See Insects section is filled with pictures and information about several different insect “orders”. Kids can read about the insects in each order and what characteristics they have that place them in that category. If your child is too young to read, then each section is also narrated so they can listen to the information! Now it’s time to head out on a bug-hunt of your own and record your observations and findings in your handy Observation Journal. The pages include areas to record your location, the weather, your mood and notes. You can also add pictures to each entry. Finally, test all of your new found knowledge in Quizquiz where you can answer questions about all of the insects you have studied.
Meet the Insects: Village Edition is truly an amazing app. I was so impressed with the amount of information contained in it. All of the information in the app is provided by the National Science Museum of Korea so you know the data is up-to-date and accurate. The quality of the pictures and videos is top-notch. I also appreciate how everything that requires reading is also narrated so that my preschoolers can still learn about insects even if they can’t read well yet. I know that once Spring finally gets here, my boys will be outside with the iPad searching for every bug they can find. This app is one I would highly recommend for any family with children. It is a wonderful learning tool and a whole lot of fun too!
Reqirements: Compatible with iPad. Requires iOS 4.3 or later.
Disclosure: I received a free copy of this app for review purposes.
