Disclosure: I have not personally tried these apps. The descriptions come from the developers with some minor editing (and perhaps commentary) by myself. Alternative prizes may be awarded at our discretion.

Animal homes: I am already won over with the adorable illustrations in this app.  Boasting an innovative way to teach children about animal homes you look for animals in two different habitats, farm and rain forest.

Animal Homes is an app where kids are a part of a rainforest or a farm and they are learning about animals and their homes while playing and following the story of the app. A whirlwind hits the rainforest. All the baby animal run helter-skelter for protection. In doing so the baby animals get lost and hide behind the closest protective place. The kids have to first find these hidden baby animals. Then they have to take them home where their mamas are waiting for them. When the baby animal is taken to the right home, a cute video of the mama and baby animal reuniting will be played. In the process of finding the hidden animals the kids are improving their focus and concentration. In taking them home the kids are learning about the different houses of different animals. Similarly a storm hits a farm. The children will be shown a cute animated video of the storm and baby animals running helter-skelter. The kids have to then find the hidden baby animals and take them home to their mamas. There are hints to show where each animal is supposed to be placed. Lots of cute videos and funny animations for kids to have fun and learn at the same time.

Requirements: Requires iOS 5.1 or later. Compatible with iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. This app is optimized for iPhone 5. Price: $1.99  ~  See Animal Homes in the App Store

PICKnSPELL for Kids: Kids seem to love guessing games. This app combines the guess who game with spelling power introducing young children to letters and their sounds.

I am Edith, a designer/mother of a five-year old boy. I wanted to make an application that’s fun to play with my son, so I created PICKnSPELL with my husband. PICKnSPELL is a simple app where kids can learn spelling. Read the sentence on the screen and click the object that the sentence is talking about. Then, drag and drop the spelling of the object (animal, character) to the wooden box.

Requirements: Requires iOS 4.3 or later. Compatible with iPad. Price: $1.99 ~  See  PICKnSPELL in the App Store

Itsy Monster: As we approach the spooky season of things that go bump in the night, allowing children to build their own monster is great for imaginative play.

You can create, combine and design amazing monsters with more then 2000 monster combinations,  7 Different heads, 7 variations of arms,  7 Bodies of different flavors, and 7 Pairs of legs. Game play has stunning animations, extra ordinary music and sounds, and a variety of monsterfoods. This app is very fun and stimulating and encourages children’s imagination and creativity.
