I have a confession. My kids are scared of movies. I own quite a few Pixar, Disney and Pixar/Disney films, and with a few exceptions, my children are too scared to watch them. I found my 4 and 6 year old close to tears half way through Toy Story. What’s a mom to do?
I may have found an answer. A few weeks ago I was looking to increase my DVD library before a long car trip. I decided to show my kids trailers from the original Monsters, Inc, my favorite Pixar movie. To my surprise, my kids were instantly hooked by Sully, Mike Wazowski, and little Boo. They laughed and laughed at the idea that kids could be poisonous to monsters. And so I went to purchase the DVD…only to discover it is currently unavailable. Locked away in the Disney Vault until after the current run of Monsters, Inc in 3-D in theaters? Knowing my kids were not ready for the 3-D version we settled for the available online trailers.
And then, within the next day or two, I received a request to review a new Monsters, Inc app! Disney, you truly do make dreams come true!
My kids quickly absconded with the iPad and I heard giggles, laughter and soon enough, loud monster roars as they made their way through the story and game. They quickly decided which pages and movie clips were their favorites and watched them over and over. And every so often, one of them looks for a place they are allowed to roar during a sibling’s naptime!
Clearly, Monsters, Inc. Storybook Deluxe by Disney is a huge hit in my house! The app follows a similar format to other Disney Storybook Deluxe apps. It is split into two parts:
1) Read – the default for read is to listen to the narrator, which is interspersed with actual lines and clips from the movie. There is also the option to record and listen to your own voice. If you would prefer to have no music or sound effects, you can choose this on the home page by pressing the settings button (little yellow exclamation point under the door that says “read”). Be warned though, settings will also let your kids navigate to the app store to view other Disney apps. It should also be noted that while the iTunes page says the app only uses 293 MB, like most Disney Apps it seems to actually be somewhat larger once downloaded and used. My iPhone says that it is 777 MB.
2) Play – In this game you get to be the monster and run through a scare simulation course. Using player cards collected through reading the story, choose which monster you would like to be, run though a kid’s room obstacle course and roar as loudly as you can to collect screams!
Monsters, Inc. Storybook Deluxe is a fantastic entry into Disney’s Storybook Deluxe Apps. Old fans and new viewers alike will love reading and interacting with the story of Sully, Mike and little Boo. Best of all, your little ones will love filling up their own scare meter as they dash through the obstacle course in the included game!
