Operation Math came out several weeks ago and I’ve been dying to share this app with you. It comes from Spinlight Studio, the good folks behind AlphaTots, TallyTots and TableTots. Operation Math is their first app for older children and to quote my kids, “It rocks!” The app was designed for children ages 5 to 12 and it works with basic addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. However…this is much more than your average math facts and flashcard app. This is, well, Operation Math.

You are Agent Prime and your job is to stop Dr. Odd from eliminating the world’s even numbers. To do this you find Dr. Odd’s secret bases and work through the doors that block your escape route. To open the doors you must solve a number of math equations in 60 seconds, one equation for each door. The equation shows on the door and you type in the answer on Agent Prime’s secret agent watch. If you enter the correct answer the doors open with a swish revealing the next one and on and on until you’ve escaped. Then it’s on to the next mission. Each mission has a geographic location and a clever description. The app has professional narration that makes you feel like you might really be in the midst of a spy mission. As you progress through the missions Agent Prime unlocks special suits and watches. There is also a training section if you need more prep before embarking on a mission.

My seven year old son has become dedicated to helping Agent Prime defeat Dr. Odd. He’s only in first grade but he’s working hard, making his way through the missions that are at his skill level. It’s great to see him so caught up in a math app. It can be tricky to find that magic spot for an app in this age range, you can’t go too cutesy and you can’t go too sophisticated. You want a challenge but not frustration. Spinlight has found that balance with Operation Math and here’s hoping that this is the first of more 5-12 year old apps to come!
