Pirate Puzzles is brought to the App Store by Ayars Animation, the development studio behind this tremendous adaptation of Jack and the Beanstalk. In their new app they have created a mashup of pirates and jigsaw puzzles. The puzzles are all made of nice, chunky pieces and when completed they show pirate themed pictures. There are two sets of puzzles in the app and each set has nine puzzles making for a total of eighteen. The puzzles begin with a small number of pieces but as you complete each one you unlock the next and they increase in difficulty. As I mentioned the finished puzzles turn into a picture with animation, music and sometimes dialogue. Complete all nine puzzles in a set and you will unlock a mystery pirate song. The songs are fully animated, entertaining and interactive.

Pirate Puzzles has been well polished and the graphics are fantastic. I wouldn’t expect any less from Ayars. In addition to Jack and the Beanstalk they’re also behind another terrific storybook app, Cozmo’s Day Off. The pirate songs are fun and an original incentive for completing the puzzles. My only suggestion for the developers involves the way puzzle pieces are handled. Right now they are “sucked” into place when you drag the piece close to where it belongs on the puzzle. You’ll also see hints as the spot on the puzzle begins to bounce when the puzzle piece nears. The app is targeted for 3-7 year olds and these things definitely help the younger children find success with the app. My suggestion would be to add an option to turn off these hints and helps so that older children find more of a challenge with the puzzles. I believe doing this would increase the app’s age range and replay value. That being said, if you have a child in the 3-7 age range I have no doubt they’ll find success and sea-faring entertainment with Pirate Puzzles.
