Here’s a nifty little app! Printy will take your pictures and turn them into black and white coloring pages, ready for printing. It can all be done in a few simple steps. First you take a photo with your device’s camera or you choose one already stored in your library. Printy turns the photo into a black and white line drawing and the next thing you’ll do is adjust the thickness of the lines and the balance between the black and white. I found that I had different effects depending on whether I adjusted the lines or the balance first. It might take you some experimenting to get just the right look. Once you have your black and white image the way you want it you can send it to print directly from your device via AirPrint. If you’re like me and your printer is a bit old fashioned not to worry, you can email yourself a copy of the image as a PDF file and then print it out later.

Marco Botton, the developer of Printy explains that he developed the app because even though his children love drawing with apps he wanted them to learn how to use colored pencils as well. He explains “So I made Printy to help myself in finding new stuff to color. It is so easy now: take a picture, adjust, print! They come to me with a book and ask “dad please I want to color this little pig”. And in half a minute they have a beautiful pig to color. It couldn’t be easier for me and funnier for them!”

There are so many possible ways you could use Printy: coloring pages of familiar household objects, family members, illustrations from favorite books. This is a simple yet great app that I can see my family using for a long time to come.
