The Shiny Bakery is open for business! It’s time for your little one to help Alice the Zebra as she bakes in her kitchen. Alice the Zebra loves to bake, but she needs your help mixing, measuring, decorating and serving the cakes and cookies to customers! This app does a great job of “mixing” fun and education. Throughout the app, kids will be introduced to early number sense through counting, measuring, dividing and sequencing activities. Children can learn counting as they add eggs to the mix. By using steps provided in pictures, kids can learn how to follow a recipe (or how to follow instructions in general). The concept of cause and effect will also be explored…what happens when you add the wrong ingredients to your cake or cookie batter? Of course, this also encourages problem solving skills…did you make a mistake/how do you fix it? And, once the customers arrive, you and your little one can help divide the cake into equal portions and serve it. I also really liked how kids could learn to read emotions – the customers will either leave satisfied or disappointed…share equally and the customers are happy, but if you don’t some customers may feel sad.
In addition to helping children with simple math and problem solving skills, the app also helps children improve their fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination (through grabbing ingredients, cracking eggs, sifting flour, and decorating). I love how kids can use their creativity to decorate their baked goods with icing, sprinkles and other assorted decorations. I think that this app does a great job of encouraging creativity and imagination.
I loved the Shiny Bakery app! I have been a fan of all the Shiny Things apps that I have tried, if you like this one, I would encourage you to check out their other apps. I would definitely recommend this app to parents of young children, I know that I will be playing it more with my 3 year old son!
Disclosure: I received a free copy of this app for review purposes.
