Simplex Spelling Phonics 1 is the follow up app to Simplex Spelling and it takes the original app and only makes it better. Simplex Spelling was marvelous to begin with and I think the dedicated focus on phonics makes this app a powerful teaching tool. Here’s how it works.

There are 42 lists in Simplex Spelling Phonics and each one works with a different phonics rule. When children begin a list they’ll hear a short phonics lesson that explains the rule. Next they’ll work on spelling the words that have been chosen as examples. When spelling, children will hear the word, then a sentence using the word and then the word again. They are shown the number of boxes needed for the letters in the word and below that is the alphabet. When they tap on a letter it will appear in a box at the top of the screen. Letters can also be dragged to the box children want them to be in. When your child has correctly spelled the word they are rewarded with positive encouragement.

This is all fine and good but it’s the little extras that set Simplex Spelling apart. It’s quite wonderful. If children get stuck on a word there is a hunt button that reveals phonics hints. For each letter they can see the letter and letter combinations that make the sound needed for the word. The correct one is shown in a different color so it’s easily identifiable but I like that children get to see all of the phonograms and sounds. Children are also able to drag and rearrange letters once they have been placed in a word, allowing children to correct themselves if needed. Simplex Spelling Phonics 1 also has the interactive tutorial found in the original Simplex Spelling. Here the app’s features are turned into a spelling list. As children go through this first spelling list they will also be learning how to use all of the features in the app. It’s one of the most effective tutorials I’ve used.

If you’re looking for a solid, educational spelling app that will build confidence in your child, this is one for you.

Thank you to th Mum who created this App. My daughter is struggling with spelling and this is a marvelous helping tool.
the only thing I would suggest to add if possible is a list where you can create your own list of words. My daughter brings home 10 words to practice for the week, however they are a mixture of non similar words. Would love to add her weekly list for her to also practice using this method.
once again thanks heaps GREAT PROGRAM!
