I grew up with the slogan, “Only You Can Prevent Forest Fires!” As a Girl Scout Brownie our leader was the wife of the District Forest Service Ranger. We met at their cute little white house with forest green shutters that had pine trees cut out of the center. (Yes you could say a grew up in the hill country.) Our meetings often talked about caring for the forest and I still have a comic book from those days telling the story of how Smokey Bear became a national icon. He’s been the wildfire prevention icon for 70 year and now he has his own series of digital storybooks!
Campfire Kids is the first book in the series, telling the story of Harold, June and their Dad when they head out for the yearly family camping trip. Along with family fun the kids learn some valuable lessons. Mr Lee gives them their first lesson right when they get to the campsite, pointing out that he was careful when parking the car because the hot exhaust pipe can cause fires in tall grasses. After unloading the care and setting up camp the family enjoys going on a hike. The long hike has Dad a bit more tired that the kids and soon he’s sleeping soundly. What’s next for them to do? How about get the campfire ready so they can stay warm when the sun goes down? Prepping a campfire is about more than gathering stick and logs though, will they remember the other things they need to do? Maybe a visit from Smokey will be needed help everyone stay safe.
This picture book app is a great instructional tool to help teach young children about fire safety. I was please to find familiar illustrations and vintage styling in the representation of Smokey. The story moves along at a good pace and offers insight without being preachy. Each page has a hidden animation, but interactions are limited. It would make a great bedtime story to share, especially if camping plans are in your future.
