Speech with Milo – Interactive Storybook is the third Milo app that I’ve had the pleasure of reviewing. As I’ve had a chance to use each app I’ve been receiving an education in speech therapy. The Milo apps have been created by a licensed Speech-Language Pathologist and they’ve covered everything from sequencing to verbs. This app gives children a chance to work on their storytelling skills.

The Interactive Storybook comes with a story and interactive elements on each page. Narration and sound effects are also included. All of this can be used or not used, it’s up to you. You can have your children listen to the story and follow along with the words on the screen. Or you can turn both the text and narration off and have children make up their own story. The interactions can be left on so children can tap the screen for silly effects, or you can turn them off. A record feature allows you to record children telling their story and then play it back. There are a number of customizable options so you can tailor the app just for your child. This isn’t an app that was developed exclusively as a storybook app. If you’re looking for that type of immersive experience this isn’t the app for you. This is an app that uses a story as a tool for teaching and therapy.

The developers suggest a solid list of ways you can use the app. They are:

•Develop storytelling and/or retelling skills

•Practice predicting skills

•Practice answering questions

•Teach critical thinking (how/why/why not/what if questions)

•Obtain a language sample

•Use as an informal diagnostic tool for assessing narrative skills

•Improve grammatical skills

•Increase utterance length

•Develop complex sentences

•Describe and discuss the animals, actions, and sounds on each page.

Once again parents, teachers and therapists working in the area of Speech Therapy have a great resource in the Milo apps.
