My kids are FULL of amazing and creative stories. Most of them are elaborated versions of the things that happen to them each day, but they are also very skilled at coming up with some fabulous tales all on their own. My daughter’s first grade teacher has been sending them home with blank 5-page books for them to write and illustrate stories of their own and then they get to read them in front of the class. Telling stories come naturally to children as their imaginations and minds are constantly engaged. Super Duper Story Maker is an app that draws on that natural creativity and gives children a safe and fun outlet with which to share their stories!
Open up this app and you get two choices: Create a Story or Tell a Story. If you choose Create a Story, the screen opens up with a blank sheet of paper and plenty of materials to create. Kids can choose markers to draw their own illustrations or they can pick from several categories of pictures that are included with the app. Some of the categories are Places, People, Clothes, Foods, Weather, and the list goes on. Each category has several options to choose from making the possibilities truly limitless. Kids can also take pictures with the camera and insert them right into their stories. There is a keyboard for them to type the text for their stories also. My favorite feature is that once the story is done, the author can record themselves narrating their story!
Once you have created and saved your story, you can go back and choose the Tell a Story tab and you can open up and read or listen to your story over and over again. Kids can create their own library of their creations. This app isn’t just limited to story books; you can use it to create comic books, photo albums or even greeting cards. You could also use the recording feature to add sound effects into your creations.
I’ve saved the very best thing about this app for the last: IT’S FREE! Super Duper Story Maker is perfect for families as well as educators. Not only is it Super Duper FUN, but it also teaches important skills such as reading, vocabulary, sentence structure, grammar and punctuation. It is a great way for kids to practice their reading and storytelling skills because they can hear the way they sound telling the story when they play it back. My girls have had so much fun with this app creating stories and comic books for their younger brothers. My boys love listening to their sisters narrate the stories they have written, many of which are about them! Pick up this app and start creating your own collection of stories. Your kids will have hours of reading fun to show for it!
