A few days ago Swapsies released an update that rebuilt the app and built in more content. This cute app for toddlers now includes an activity for each occupation and a quiz mode. It’s still perfectly suited for the toddler – young preschool crowd but now they’re going to get even more out of it.

  • Mix Up – Mix Up asks children to make a match with three items of clothing – a hat, a top and a pair of pants. Children can choose from six characters for the dress up activity. There are three girls and three boys. To swap out the clothing they use a simple swipe motion on the screen. Easy for a toddler who’s familiar with an iDevice! Children can create their own silly combinations or they can try to match the outfits for ten different occupations. When they make a match they’re rewarded with a special activity that goes along with the job. They can put out a fire (fireman), help stop cars so a turtle can cross the street (police officer), put cookies in a bakery box (baker), fly a spaceship to the moon (astronaut) and more. There is also a checklist that marks off the uniforms as children make the matches.
  • Quiz Me – Quiz Me asks children simple questions about the Swapsies characters. Which hat goes on the firefighter? What else does the doctor need? After several questions children are given a bonus round that is like a junior seek and find game.

Children can easily switch between the two above modes from the app’s home screen. They’ll also find a spinner where they can spin to play one of the special activities from Mix Up. My toddler will try just about any app that appears on the iPad or my iPhone and that can result in frustration because more often or not she’ll run into something that she can’t do by herself. Swapsies is just right for her 2 1/2 year old fingers and skills and she can play it all by herself. Fantastic!

One last note…I was playing around with the app late at night while writing up this review and my Swapsies characters kept falling asleep. They’d wake up when I would change their clothes but the minute I moved my finger away their eyes closed and the “Zs” were drifting away from their head. I’m going to have to double check in the morning but I don’t remember this happening earlier in the day. I think they’re sleeping because it’s bedtime and I love that attention to detail.

You can read my original review from over a year ago here. Compare the screenshots in the two posts and you’ll be able to see what a difference these changes make.
