Playing a little bit of catch up here! I’ve been meaning to get out reviews for The Amazing Spiderman and Toy Story Showtime! from Disney Publishing Worldwide Applications. I had some help with these from my favorite guys. My son helped me review Spiderman and his good friends, our neighbors, Mr. L and Mr. M. gave Toy Story Showtime! a try for us.
The Amazing Spiderman: An Origin Story – This is the story of how Peter Parker became Spiderman and my seven year old son loved it. The app is done as a story, not a comic book and is narrated by Stan Lee, co-creator of Spiderman. The illustrations are obviously professionally done and the app uses a zooming/panning feature where they will move as the text is read. It adds excitement to the story. Mixed in among the story are activities that involve using the iDevice. Readers complete the activity to move the story along. I just updated the app and it now has Spiderman mini-games. Mr. O is going to be very excited when he sees those! I think his only complaint with the app was the story’s ending. The first time he went through it he sat there for a second with a very confused look on his face. It was enough to make me ask him if he didn’t like the story. Nope, he was upset because it ended in a way that left him hanging. He wanted the story to continue and was not a happy camper that it had to end. Here’s hoping for more Amazing Spiderman apps! Toy Story Showtime! – My kids are just older and younger than the Toy Story audience so I asked my good friend for help with this review. She had her two sons (2 1/2 & 5) try out the app for me. From the developer, “Toy Story Showtime! is a Disney Learning interactive storybook designed to help children explore essential early reading concepts. Kids are invited to join Buzz Lightyear as he sets out to impress Jessie the Cowgirl in the talent show. As Buzz tries his luck at everything from comedy to juggling, emerging readers discover new vocabulary words in the context of a rich, interactive storytelling experience. Bonus activities encourage children to use the vocabulary in both guided and exploratory play.”
Sunde thought Toy Story Showtime! was a cute app and a nice alternative to letting her toddler watch Toy Story 3 over and over on the iPhone. Her boys loved the Toy Story characters and she liked the extra vocabulary words. The app lets you tap on them (over and over if you like!) so you can become familiar with them. She says that the app can be used by younger children if they want to listen to the story and tap on the objects. The activity her older son most enjoyed was choosing dance moves and making Buzz Lightyear dance. The price is more than she normally spends on an app but because there are several games and activities that come with the story she thinks the price is right if your child loves Toy Story. Requirements: Compatible with iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, iPod touch (3rd generation), iPod touch (4th generation) and iPad. Requires iOS 3.2 or later.
