This app is a wonder at building your knowledge of the United States. I jumped through the tutorial thinking I recognize all the states and it would be a snap. The first game was. Our family powered through with even my 5th grader moving along with speed and skill. Then we gave the same game a try using state flags instead of state shape. We totally tanked at filling our frog’s belly with correct answers. That had us hitting the books for some study time. In the reference section you learn the state capital, flag, state birds and interesting facts, nicknames and landmarks. You will need to familiarize yourself with all these facts as you work through the eight different games, four of which are open when you start and four you earn as you move up levels.
The most challenging game for us so far is Dart-A-Map. I can tell you without hesitation that Mount Rushmore is in South Dakota (Okay, maybe I Googled to make sure before I published this review) but zooming in the map to put a dart on the exact part of the state it actually lies in was a head scratcher. This app really makes you think and familiarize yourself with more than just rote facts and the fast pace makes the app very addicting.
We passed this app around our family for high score challenges and everyone enjoyed playing it. It humbled those of us who thought we had this info down cold and beefed up our 10 year-olds knowledge for fast approaching 6th grade. I know that she will be ready to rock on next years tests and quizzes!
Since I’m lucky enough to view awesome apps each week, I’m pretty opinionated about how much I think an app is worth. At $1.99 I think this app is a bargain. I did have some hiccups during run time on an iPod Touch but great support is offered with an automatic pop-up for bug notifications to the developer with a touch of the button. Working with the MindSnack staff in the past I know they take viewer opinion seriously and I expect things to smooth out quickly. U.S. Geography is definitely another winner for this developer and I just saw on their web-page that they have a Math app coming soon. I can’t wait!
Disclosure: I received a free copy of this app for review purposes.
