Have any of you ever had your pre-teen kids tell you that you are ruining their lives because they don’t have a cell phone? My ten year old hasn’t accused me of sentencing her to the life of a social outcast yet, but with only a year left until middle school I’m sure its coming. She’s like many of your children that probably either have an iPod Touch or inherited a hand-me-down iPhone with services changed for WiFi only capabilities. Over the years with my three girls our family has tried several free text apps with varying success.  This week we’ve had the chance to give a new app a trial run, Vonage Moblie.

Vonage Mobile is a free download that has great potential for saving this Mom’s status . It gives you options to call, text or place video calls to other Vonage members worldwide over Wi-Fi and 3G/4G for free. The app uses your existing address book and it’s easy to spot friends that already have the service by the Vonage icon presented next to their name. Then its as simple as placing a regular call to talk with your fellow Vonage friends, all at no charge. Inviting new friends is a snap too.  Simply press “Invite” and check the names of contacts who may be interested to watch your free calling circle expand.  The app does all the work by sending an invitation text message for you. You also earn $0.99 credit for each new member who joins.  This credit applies to calls you might make that are not in the free app-to-app category.

When I downloaded Vonage Mobile I received an analysis email from AppCertain that this app contained expensive in-app purchases. When compared with other in-app purchases, that’s true.  Buying Vonage Credit is done through your app store in chunks ranging from $4.99 to $19.99. As a new member not many of my contacts are in my free circle, so I was a little worried about how long those credits would last. That’s why I appreciate that Vonage has included an option to check calling rates before I make a call. From the home menu you’ll find this option in “More” under “Rates”. My sister isn’t a member yet so I thought I’d check the rate on her number. I was pleasantly surprised to find her charge to be 0.0¢. That’s because for a limited time you can get FREE calls to any landline or mobile phone in the U.S., Canada and Puerto Rico. (Up to 3000 minutes per month). This is huge compared to the other apps we’ve tried.

We also stepped outside the box a little on our trial by downloading the app to my daughter’s iPod Touch. We sent texts and did video chats with no problems at all, making this a viable cell phone alternative for the future. (Particularly since I prefer her chatting to take place from home not the classroom :))  However, we did find that you can only add one device per phone number so we had to tie her device to my husbands phone.  To expand the market further I’d love to see Vonage offer capabilities that support multiple WiFi only devices. (That may not be possible, we’re getting into the techy gut stuff here.)

But, enough from me here is a brief description from the developers:

Instead of paying for these calls and texts, why not use Google Voice service to begin with? If your kid has iOS device, look for apps that work with Google Voice, something like Talkatone.or GVConnect. They get their own number (which can be carried forward in future when they get real cell phones) and all calls, texts are free.

Vonage Mobile is not bad either. I use it quite often instead of regular call on my android phone but they do not give you a number.

The app is very easy to use, and it is quite different from some of the other texting/calling apps out on the marketplace. I do already have a cell phone, so I intend on keeping the app for in case of emergency reasons. Although you cannot text everyone or call everyone for free, it is a good phone backup. Thanks for having me check it out!

Never go with Vonage instead go with lingo or any other internet based service. They are talking one and acting or doing something else. So bad customer service and very limited service plans than any other service and way too expensive. Please never sign up with Vonage. It will be a mistake if you do or did it.

I downloaded this app after reading a few reviews, but it doesn’t work. I am in Oman and trying to call uk. Is the app only for us residence. I know it’s been a few months since you read this, but I would appreciate if you could help or point me in the right direction. I have just moved to Oman and miss my mum….

Where by marble is worried, there is certainly a good deal that you could
