The Word Wizard puts a talking alphabet in your child’s hands. With this app your child can move letters around on the screen, creating words and hearing them read aloud. As they work children will be able to hear how the letters sound and if they work together or not. The alphabet letters are completely moveable, where they go is entirely up to you. Word creation becomes an experiment, you’ll be able to create long words, short words and even sentences. The app comes with both upper and lowercase letters and it works with letter recognition and phonics. There’s also a built in spell checker that will highlight the words that aren’t quite right. If you want to have some fun then you can play around with Word Wizard’s voice transformer. The voice comes in both a British and American accent and you can adjust the speed and tone with a few simple taps. There are plenty of small tweaks that can be made to get the voice just right.
In addition to the moveable alphabet Word, Wizard also comes with a Spelling Quiz section. Here your child can either practice with built in lists or add in their own words. If they choose the built in lists then the app will announce a word and they must move the letters onto the screen and spell it out. If they choose to use their own list then parents will be able to create customized lists for spelling practice.
I really like both the concept of Word Wizard and the way it’s been executed. It’s great to hear the letter sounds as they are moved around and wonderful to hear the words as they are created. This is a terrific educational learning tool for emergent readers. It’s also a fantastic resource for spelling practice.
